Psychiatry CME Requirements
Physicians: Board Certified Psychiatrists
The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) requires board certified psychiatrists to earn a total of 30 CME hours every year, with a continuous average of 90 AMA PRA Category 1 ™ credits over the previous 3 years (24 SA credits minimum).
By the end of year 3, you must earn 24 ABPN-approved SA credits (avg of 8 per year) and take the MOC exam by the end of year 10.
Physician Assistant CAQ-Psychiatry
Certified PAs (physician assistants) have the option to earn and maintain a certificate of added qualification in psychiatry from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
To be eligible, a PA must earn a minimum of 75 credits of category 1 CME focused on psychiatry in the six years preceding the exam application. At least 25 of those credits must be earned in the preceding two years.
Once awarded, the CAQ is valid for ten years, during which time a minimum of 125 category 1 CME credits focused on psychiatry must be logged for maintenance.
There are additional requirements beyond CME, so be sure to verify the full criteria with the NCCPA.
